Regenerative Tourism Hui

Event Details: In November 2022, the Southern Lakes Destination Management Plan set an ambitious target to develop a truly regenerative tourism industry by 2030. This year, the first roadmap for the district was drafted. The next step is how to put this into action. A day for all those in the industry and community to get together and have their say and shape the future. The day is set out into three sessions. Come attend the full day or if you can’t make the full day, tickets available for individual sessions.

Morning Session - Carbon Zero by 2030: how do we collectively get there? (9am-12pm)
Join the two Regional Tourism Organisations (Lake Wānaka Tourism and Destination Queenstown) alongside Destination Think for a global and local view on Carbon Zero by 2030. With a focus on the transition from strategy to action, providing ideas and tools from the district-wide roadmap. Come along to understand what needs to be done and what you can do.

Lunch Session - Travelling Together: we've come a long way in a short time! (12pm - 1:30pm)
This will be a working lunch and joint session with Grounded Governance to discuss the story behind one of the key foundational projects to come out of the Destination Management Plan - the formation of an independent governance group at a district wide level. Plus, a chance to hear about the formation of Love Wanaka and Love Queenstown from Community Fund Coordinator, Ash Bickley. Ticket price includes a beautiful lunch with locally sourced produce from Fedeli

Afternoon Session - Tackling Waste: A Pathway to Carbon Zero, a workshop with Wastebusters (1:30pm - 4pm)
This will be an action-oriented session that will focus on the key themes: Food Waste/ Composting Solutions, Waste reduction across the supply chain, Zero Waste Storytelling, Recycling 101 / SUC free. This is an opportunity to work with local experts on critical waste minimisation within your business. Not only reducing your carbon footprint but looking at efficiencies and cost reduction within your operation.

Meet Your Hui team:

Tim Barke - General Manager of Lake Wanaka Tourism.

Mat Woods - Mat is currently the Chief Executive at Destination Queenstown (DQ). Prior to joining DQ, Mat was head of sales & services at Cardrona Alpine Resort (CARL) and Treble Cone and was involved in the acquisition of Treble Cone, securing the rights to develop into the SOHO Basin. Mat moved from CARL to join the parent company RealNZ as GM of Experience Whakatipu to oversee the Queenstown operation of the TSS Earnslaw, Walter Peak, Jet Boating and Water Taxis.

Rodney Payne - Co-founder & CEO of Destination Think!, the leading international consultancy & agency working with the most innovative and progressive destination marketing organisations on the planet. My role affords me the responsibility and privilege of leading a team that has reached the pinnacle of its industry, successfully delivering thousands of branding, strategy, campaign, content marketing & sustainability-related projects for destinations all over the world.

Tyler Robinson - Destination Think. Tyler is a climate change and sustainability professional who is passionate about developing resilient places that can thrive in the face of climate change and other sustainability challenges. He has extensive experience in climate action strategy development, GHG assessments, impact measurement/management, marketing strategy, and project management. His approach to destination development and sustainability is informed by the Sustainable Development Goals, the Impact Management Project, and science-based climate change targets. Employing a systems-thinking mindset and leveraging an interdisciplinary background allows him to effectively plan and execute complex sustainable development initiatives. A BSc in business and MSc in environmental management and policy allows him to identify and utilize the most significant levers to address climate change and other interconnected sustainability challenges. Integral in his approach is centring principles of DEI and equity to inform a just transition to a low carbon society.

Wastebusters Team - Wastebusters has been blazing a trail for over two decades, making the circular economy a reality for our district through practical resource recovery solutions and community-led behaviour change. Join us as we explore how tourism businesses can take tangible action to minimise waste and keep resources in use on the road to 2030. It can’t be done alone but, with decisive community and visitor engagement, the future is bright and the future is waste free.

UBCO Team - UBCO will be a vehicle partner to the WAO Summit 2023 and very kindly providing a small fleet of 2x2 Electric Adventure Vehicles to WAO for the summit organisers and speakers to use to get around Wanaka using as little energy as possible.

Starting off at the WAO Tourism Hui UBCO will be attending the hui and welcoming participants coming along who are keen to find out more about UBCO to come along and take one of our 2x2 vehicles for a test ride. Our friendly team will be on hand to welcome riders to test out our bikes during tea breaks, the lunch break and after the hui concludes between 4-5pm.

What is the Hui? The hui format is a full day session, including a delicious locally sourced lunch, to listen, learn and most importantly discuss next steps into the future.
