Plant Propagation Course

  • Central Otago campus, Otago Polytechnic, Cromwell (map)

This Otago Polytechnic course provides a hands-on plant propagation experience in a commercial nursery under the technical guidance of experienced propagators. The campus nursery is well-equipped with mist and heat beds, glasshouses, hardening and shade houses.

Under the guidance of our Nursery team, you will learn to collect, process and germinate seed, eco-source native plants, and develop your ability to propagate a wide variety of different plants by cuttings, using our mist and heat bed and large glasshouses. No prior knowledge of propagation required.

Learn to grow a wide range of plants to a saleable grade from seed and cuttings, including vegetables, berry fruit, native trees and shrubs, drought-resistant plants, annuals and specialist plants. You will be encouraged to propagate plants which interest you and learn techniques you can use at home in a non-commercial setting.

You will be encouraged to follow your own plant interests, whether it be food growing, natives, perennials or trees, and the course will also include some local field trips to inspire you.

Dates: The course runs one day a week, mostly Thursdays, 9am-3pm.
Classes run March - November.

Fees: $910
